In a new low to Indian democracy, BJP MLAs assaulted an independent MLA in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly for hosting a beef party, turning the House into a battleground on Thursday.

Following the lynching of a 55-year-old man by mob in Dadri in Uttar Pradesh, cow politics took centrestage in Bihar assembly elections, thanks to Lalu Prasad Yadav’s remark on meat eaters. BJP took no time to make it an election issue. Be it senior BJP leader from the state Sushil Kumar Modi or star campaigner PM Narendra Modi, they are leaving no stone unturned in milking the ill-timed statement of the RJD supremo.

That was not all. Politics on cow meat echoed in Jammu & Kashmir on Thursday as BJP MLAs attacked Engineer Rashid, an independent MLA, inside the Assembly after he organised a beef party to oppose restrictions on cow slaughter.

Video footage of the incident shows BJP MLAs caught hold of Rasheed and thrashed him before proceedings began. Senior BJP leader Nirmal Singh later apologised while criticising Rashid for hosting the beef party. CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah later condemned the assault.

“This is the first time I have seen such behaviour in the House. Speaker suspends Opposition members in a blink, here he said he will look into the matter and investigate.” said Omar Abdullah, adding “If they can’t control their emotions they should avoid the House.”
