In what could be an embarrassment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi began walking while Indian national anthem was being played during the guard of honour being accorded to him after his arrival in Moscow for a two-day tour.
Video footage shows a Russian officer gesturing Modi to move ahead and he began walking “Jana Gana Mana” began playing. Another Russian officer gently nudged him to move back and he stepped back. As per convention, one should stand in attention when the national anthem is played.
The Prime Minister will hold annual talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both nations are expected to enter into a number of pacts on nuclear energy, hydrocarbons, defence and trade. Talks between the two countries at the highest level have been taking place alternately in Moscow and New Delhi since 2000.
