In its first direct military response to the Uri terror attack, India conducted surgical strikes across the LoC on seven terror launchpads, killing 36 terrorists, two Pakistani soldiers and inflicting significant casualties. The army’s Director General of Military Operations Lt General Ranjit Singh said Pakistan was informed – in keeping with protocol – of the cross-border strike, adding the insurgents were targeted after a week of surveillance.

“Significant casualties have been caused to terrorists and those trying to shield them. We don’t have a plan to further conduct such strikes. India has spoken to Pakistan. Now, based on very specific and credible information we received yesterday, that some terrorist teams had positioned themeselves at launch pads along the LoC with an aim to carry out infiltration and terrorist strikes in J&K and various other metros in our country,” the DGMO said.

The operation began Wednesday midnight and continued till around 4:30am on Thursday. The surgical strikes were recorded on cameras; the government will decide whether and when to release the footage. The operations included para commandos and helicopters, up to 2 kms deep inside. Indian soldiers returned before sunrise with no casualties.

However, Pakistan has denied that Indian troops had carried out surgical strikes across the Line of Control, saying it had responded to “cross-border fire” from the Indian side and called India’s statement as ‘fabrication of truth’. A Pakistan military’s statement reads: “There has been no surgical strike by India, instead there had been cross-border fire initiated and conducted by India which is existential phenomenon.”

Meanwhile, BSF has confirmed that the beating retreat ceremony, held at the Wagah border in Punjab, has been called off as tensions between India and Pakistan heighten furthermore following the surgical strikes.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi said that her party stands with the government in its actions to protect our country’s security and deal with the menace of terrorism from across the border. “This is a strong message that conveys our country’s resolve to prevent further infiltration and attacks on our security forces and our people,” she said in a statement.
