In a big blow to the BJP, cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, Monday, resigned from the Rajya Sabha amid indications that he may quit the BJP and join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Reports said Sidhu may be anointed as chief ministerial as AAP’s CM candidate for the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab.

Sidhu, a three-time Lok Sabha MP from Amritsar, was elected to the Upper House in April. While he was not available for comment, his staff in Amritsar confirmed the news of his resignation.

Sidhu’s move came on the day AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal visited the Golden Temple, a famous Sikh shrine.
