The BBMP has had enough of people not taking its plastic ban seriously, and it’s getting mad. So the next time you’re walking down the street with a plastic bag in your hand, don’t be surprised if you’re slapped with a Rs 500 fine. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has started fining people who use plastic Rs 500 and repeat offenders can expect to be relieved of Rs 1,000.The bags manufacturer will be fined a maximum of Rs 5 lakh.

Plastic garbage is one of the major sources of pollution. The products made of plastic are often non-biodegradable, hence, take millions of years to decompose. Bangalore city alone generates around 350 to 400 metric tons of plastic waste per day which is then dumped into the landfills. This disposal creates irreversible environmental damage in land and water.
