Ram Gopal Varma will soon entertain viewers with the story behind Asia’s biggest manhunt – that to capture and kill Veerappan – in Hindi. The trailer of Varma’s next film Veerappan, the Tamil version of which was titled Killing Veerappan, was released on Monday (April 18). Within a few minutes of the release of the trailer, the hashtag ‘#VeerappanTrailer’ climbed the trend-charts on Twitter in India.

The film is Varma’s attempt at recounting the incidents that led up to Operation Cocoon, the mission to capture and kill the Terror of the South Veerappan. The sandalwood smuggler was chased for 20 years through the forests of Tamil Nadu, during the course of which Veerappan struck terror in the hearts of authorities with several murders and kidnappings.

In 2004, the Tamil Nadu Special Task Force, led by K Vijay Kumar killed Veerappan and some of his associates.

The trailer of Veerappan which was released on Monday shows the brutality and the killings that took place during the rule of this bandit in the forest lands. The trailer of begins with a quote by Voltaire: A society gets a criminal it deserves. A comparison with Osama Bin Laden follows; how it took 10 years to nab and kill Osama, while Veerappan made authorities chase him for 20 years before being killed.
