Police in India have come up with an eye-catching way to shame people who urinate in public – by hanging flower garlands around their necks.
Authorities in the Indian city of Hyderabad have a unique way of trying to discourage public urination. The new campaign involves traffic police in Hyderabad placing flower garlands around the necks of violators. A request is then made not to repeat the behavior, and information about the nearest restrooms is provided. The Quint reports that the local traffic inspector came up with the program, called Shame Garland, after seeing some NGOs bring attention to public urinators in a similar way. The response on the department’s Facebook page has been largely positive, but there are also comments about the need to build more public toilets. About 15 people were cited on the first day.
