Going to the toilet is as natural to humans as breathing or hearing about the Kardashians. However roughly 2.4 billion people across the planet don’t have access to decent sanitation. Many are forced to ‘do their business’ in the open, which can lead to disease and in some cases puts them at risk of other dangers.

A recent report by the UN says that due to ‘bad economic and bad infrastructure’ millions of people – the majority of them children – die each year as a result of poor sanitation, unhygienic living conditions and lack of clean water supplies.

To bring attention to this international problem, Reuters have captured the different toilets used by people around the world, showing the stark differences in the sanitation available to certain areas.
