If things go as planned, the city of Jamshedpur will soon become a shining example of waste treatment and environmental conservation in India. The city administration is setting up an enormous waste water treatment plant that will purify all of the city’s effluents and supply recycled water for industrial purposes. This will not only prevent the sewerage from entering nearby water bodies, but also create an additional source of water for the industries.
The Jamshedpur Utilities and Services Company (JUSCO), a Tata Steel subsidiary, has undertaken the task of building a water treatment plant at Bara. This plant will have a capacity of treating upto 30 million litres of sewerage water per day. Together with the existing plant located at Bistupur, the whole system will be able to treat upto 40 million litres of sewerage per day, effectively recycling the entire sewerage discharge of Jamshedpur. Note that the industrial city ranks 4th in terms of India’s per capita water consumption.
