The movie starts with Swara Bhaskar (Chanda) and her daughter Riya Shukhla (Apeksha/Apu) lying down in their puny chawl that has all that is required but misses out on fortune. So while Chanda hops between three jobs in a day to support her daughter’s education, Apu has other thoughts captivating her mind which doesn’t involve studying! Chanda works as a housemaid for Ratna Pathak Shah (who is lovingly called Didi) and in fact, works at the shoe factory and even dhobi ghat to gather funds for the house and most importantly, daughter’s education. However, Apu is completely oblivious to this fact and has no ambition or dream in life. All she wishes to be is a maid, just like her mother whereas Chanda wishes her daughter to become something big in life and not follow her footsteps.
Riya’s inability to grasp this fact puts Swara in a fix and after Didi’s suggestion, she joins the same school as her daughter’s. This obviously annoys Apu, who thinks its very embarrassing to have her mother in the same class as her. To make sure Chanda quits school, Apu challenges her that if she scores more than her in Math, then Chanda will have to leave school. Now this is interesting to watch the movie.
